Refurbishment of Church Tower Underway
29 April 2016
martin & hamilton is working on a project to refurbish the tower, and conduct associated building engineering services at St Patrick’s Church, on Donegall Street in Belfast.
As construction of the Listed Church was completed in 1877, much of the original stonework has deteriorated over the years due to weathering. Work currently being conducted includes significant stonework conservation along with the installation of an external lighting system.
One of the main challenges was the erection of the scaffolding to the top of the spire, which is 55 metres above street level. Due to its complex nature, part of the load of the scaffolding is channelled through the main Church structure.
Work commenced in January 2016 and is scheduled to take 12 months to complete.
